The Grace of Christ be with you!
What does the future hold? Ultimately, of course, the future promises the return of Christ and the beginning of God’s peaceable kingdom on earth. I call this God’s redemption of time. Time, which had worked against God’s good creation by introducing decay and death, is redeemed by the hope of Christ’s return and by allowing time for the victims of decay (e.g., decadence) to repent and believe.
The immediate future, however, is less certain. Will the next day, year, or decade call for bold or cautious action? The church is baptized in the faith of Christ yet among the baptized even in one church there are those who call for bold actions and those who council caution. How does a church decide who is right and what course to take, bold or cautious, as it seeks to follow Christ? Ultimately, it comes down to a basic question: what does mean to be baptized by a church into the faith?
-
Baptism recognizes those whom God forgives.
-
Baptism brings diverse people into church.
-
Baptism removes the barriers that separate us from God and others believers.
-
Baptism celebrates diversity in the church body rather than demanding conformity.
-
Baptism calls on the bold and the cautious to work together to set a common course.
The Presbyterian Church (USA) recognizes the baptism of all other Christian denominations. Also, a basic tenant of our faith is that the only criterion for church membership is faith in Christ. Such theological stances have a practical effect on the church as a whole; we are very diverse in many ways even as we are one by faith in Christ. Ultimately, when the church respects diversity (Out of respect for Christ who calls us together) the bold and cautious can learn from each other & work together for Christ.
Blessings, Will
