The Grace of Christ be with you!

A newspaper article once pointed out how the American experience of Christmas is as much watched on television as it is lived in real life (see reference below). Indeed, in many homes the TV and Christmas tree sit side by side and vie for our attention. Yet, television not only brings in sentimental nostalgia for some idealized Christmas of yore, it can also broadcast the continuing darkness of the world in high definition right into the middle of our Christmas celebrations. Like the story of Herod’s murder of the children in Bethlehem, the television can remind us of injustice and raise the same unsettling question, “Why does God allow the innocent to suffer?”

  • God plays favorites.

  • God’s will is inscrutable.

  • God forsakes violence & joins in with the innocent who are persecuted.

God’s will is not inscrutable. God’s will is for salvation. Neither does God play favorites except to choose those, e.g., Joseph, through whom to bless the world. Instead, in the cross of Christ —which the story of Herod’s murder of the innocents foreshadows—God forsakes the use of violence and shares the fate of all the persecuted who die the death of an innocent victim.

Blessings, Will
